We had a great week in Kindergarten filled with many joyful moments. We began our week with learning a new poem and thinking of what we are thankful for. Mrs. Nation set up a wonderful virtual author's visit with Maggie P. Chang. The children loved her books about Geraldine. They had such fun making the lunchboxes (biandang). Ms. Chang was so excited to see the creations of our children at Westchester. On Tuesday we made our pinecone turkeys. This is always a fun activity. I hope you enjoy having your turkey decorate the Thanksgiving table. On Wednesday we talked about 'now and long ago' and made butter in our classroom. The giggles as the cream turned from a liquid to a solid were contagious. The children put the butter on crackers. Since we had crackers it seemed like the perfect time to talk about a Thanksgiving favorite...cranberry sauce. Many of the children actually tried it, some liked it and some not so much. Thursday we decided we needed to do our STEAMy Friday activity...so we did STEAMy Thursday. I was just too excited about this one to let it go undone. We read the book Balloons Over Broadway which tells the story of the inventor of the balloons used in the Macy's Day Parade. It is a beautiful book. The children thought about a balloon they wanted to create and then we set out to make them. It was so much fun. We ended up parading through the other kindergarten rooms to show off our creations. I hope your child asks to watch the parade on Thursday and thinks about the fun we had in Kindergarten. Our finale for the week was making stone soup. We read many versions of the story during the week and the children acted out the story in literacy centers so they were ready to actually cook! Some of the children brought in items for our soup and I boiled potatoes, carrots and some of the sweet potatoes from our garden. The children enjoyed chopping up the veggies and then pretending to be the villagers. At the end of the day we ate our soup. Almost all of the children tried their cooking. Life is better when we all share. And we ended our busy week with Community Circle. Thank you so much for making the time to come see us be in charge. It is not an easy feat to practice speaking at the microphone with 5 and 6 year olds. I am always very nervous before our turn to lead. I am so grateful for my job of teaching your children. I hope you have a wonderful break from the routine of life. Cherish the time with your tiny humans and make memories together. If you have a minute email me a picture or two of your holiday and we will share them when we return.
