We spent our week learning about another group of animals, amphibians. We read that there are 3 subgroups of amphibians; frogs and toads, salamanders and newts, and caecilians. Well, I had never heard of the last group! The curriculum guide did say that most people will never see one in their lives, interesting. Anyway, we focused mostly on frogs and toads. The children loved learning about the lifecycle and specific differences between frogs and toads. We all enjoyed the descriptive names of many frogs; tomato frog, red-eyed tree frog, leopard frog, horned frog. It was a great week. In math we are working on composing and decomposing numbers. We start with 5 and move on as we master the concept. Bears in a cave is always a favorite and you could do it at home. You find a number of small objects and count them. Then the child (or you) close their eyes and the hider takes a few away (hide them under a bowl-cave). How many are in the cave? Maybe you can try it with your child. On Friday we planted flower seeds in our garden bed. The children weeded, turned the soil and planted morning glories, moon flowers, and mixed flowers. I hope we see growth soon. It was fun for me. Gosh, I almost forgot...One of the highlights of our week was Friday when five 2nd graders came to our room to share their learning. They have been studying birds and biodiversity. They planned and created bird feeders that are hanging in the school garden. We learned so much and loved having them visit. Thank you Ms. Renaux for thinking of this sharing experience. Next week will conclude our study of animals with learning about fish. It will be bitter sweet to reach the end of this 6 week unit, but you know there is...spring, leprechauns, rainbows, wind/weather, chicken eggs...so much more to wonder about.
