Have a nice rainy and then cold weekend. Find some joy. This is what I do during the dark days of January...
This week our focus was on the Forest. We talked about the animals, plants and nonliving things in the Forest. A big focus is how animals and plants adapt to their environment in order to survive. The children are so interested in this idea of adaptations. What a deep concept to be delving into as a Kindergartener! The Forest has 4 distinct seasons. During the winter the plants and animals must adapt to survive. Ask your child how they do this? In Literacy Centers the children sequenced making a snowman, learned a winter poem and wrote about what they love about winter. I love how much writing I am seeing. They are so proud of being able to put down their ideas. What a huge change from August! In Writing this week the children wrote narrative books. First they brainstormed ideas from their hearts. Second they chose a topic and created the front cover. Next they added pages detailing the experience. On Tuesday I almost gave up on this project, but Mrs. Walsh said, "Give them time. They will get it.". I am so glad I did. We have books about Visiting Canada, Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Writing to Fairies, Going Skiing, Visiting the Aquarium, The Dentist Appointment, My Ipad, My New Yoyo, My Lake House, Going to Japan, My Special Picture, Intown Stars Gymnastics, My New Bunny, Going to Hilton Head, New York, and How to not Give Up. Wow, I remembered all of them and I am sitting in my dinning room at home without the books! We read some of the books on Friday, but I could not part with them yet. Ask your child about their book. Friday we had a very successful STEAM-y Friday. Lucy's Grandmother had come as a mystery reader this week and brought us the book The Bear Snores On. The children love the Bear Books. The goal for Friday was to create a bear den using pipe cleaners, tape and paper that would fit all the animals (small paper animals) in the story. The children worked in pairs and everyone collaborated! They had a blast talking, working and creating together. In Phonics we learned sneaky y; y as a vowel. The children love the idea that y steals the sounds from i and e. Of course at first, they put y everywhere...but they will get it. We have had so many freezing wet rainy days lately. It has been a struggle for everyone. Thank goodness for PE Bowman indoor recess on YouTube and a few minutes outside with the puddles. Next week we will move on to the Ocean Biome. We will also talk about Groundhog Day and shadows...because they are so much fun. I hope we see the sun and our shadows. Have a nice rainy and then cold weekend. Find some joy. This is what I do during the dark days of January... Oh, I almost forgot...I would love to hatch baby chicks in the classroom this year, but I do not have the energy to keep them after they hatch. Baby chicks must be kept inside for 6-10 weeks and then can be moved outside. If you would like some chicks or know anyone that would be willing to take our babies, I will buy the fertilized eggs and I have the incubator. Just a thought. Of course, I can not guarantee they will be hens. I always get at least one rooster. I usually buy 6 eggs and only 2 or 3 hatch.
