We had such a great week I just had to blog. Today we buried the 'Ecology Garden'. This is a project I have done for many years. Usually the children bring an item from home (some things are biodegradable and some are not). This year I decided to gather things from school and just a couple of things from my home. The children were happy to save things from lunch and find things on the playground. We will WONDER for the next 7 months about what is happening to your items and then dig it up on Earth Day in April. Such a real life experience. We also had the joy of having 2 butterflies emerge from their chrysalises. Also, we watched a monarch caterpillar eat and eat. Hopefully we will watch him come out after break. Thank you so much Zoey's mom and Jonathan's mom for sharing science with us. Because of the butterflies, the children decided to create a butterfly center. They have decorated the window with drawings. So much joy! Of course we continued with learning more about books by doing an author study on James Dean. He has written and illustrated many books with the character Pete the Cat. The children had fun comparing and contrasting the stories and using watercolor to paint Pete. Our favorite math activity this week was counting the peas in snow pea pods. So simple, yet so engaging. The children first counted the peas in their pod and then counted two pods and finally we counted all the peas...103! After fall break we will begin the 2nd ARC unit called Zoology. The documentation panel in the hall is up and ready for the children to add their learning. They will love learning more about animals. WE are Zoologists! Have a wonderful break from the regular schedule of life and send pictures of your adventures! I will miss the small humans so much, but will rest and be ready for embarking on our Zoology Expedition.
