On Tuesday we voted on the face for our pumpkin and carved our pumpkin together. I wish I had pictures of the process. I have an amazing pumpkin carving kit with wonderful safe knives. The children helped with all of the steps. After carving, we lit the face and read a scary book called Abiyoyo. Another great day in Kindergarten. |
We started our week with a bang! We conducted the experiment: Does a pumpkin sink or float? The children decided on their hypothesis. We discussed why they thought their choice was correct and then went outside and did the experiment. It was so exciting to realize that pumpkins float...big, medium and little pumpkins all float. We then headed back inside to guess how many seeds might be inside our big pumpkin. With help from everyone, we counted by tens and our pumpkin had 602 seeds. What a great math activity. I took the seeds home and roasted them. Many of the children tried the seeds. They thought they tasted a little like popcorn. Sticking with our pumpkin theme, on Halloween we made pumpkin cookies together. It was such fun to read the recipe, measure the ingredients, mix the dough, smell the baking cookies and then eat them! Everyone loved them. Leo brought pumpkin almond milk for us to try. We gave it a taste. Some folks liked it and others were not so sure. Thank you Leo for sharing this taste sensation with the class. The children really enjoyed the math centers this week. We measured using a bat ruler, graphed fall leaves, worked with dominos, and practiced with big numbers from 1-50. Next week we will read many versions of the story Stone Soup. We will discuss how kindness can bring people together. I hope the children can get a since of what it means to be generous. The plan is to cook stone soup in our room on Friday. Ask your child about this old folk tale. Are the stones really magic?
