Curriculum Night is Thursday, August 23 starting at 6:00pm. This is a night to learn more about what is happening at Westchester and have a chance to see some of your child's work in the classroom. On the table by the classroom door, I will have a sign up sheet for conferences. Be thinking about a good time for you. I am available in the morning between 7:00am-7:45am Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. I am also available in the afternoons after 2:45pm Wednesday-Thursday. Another time that can be used is our special time, 1:10-2:10 on Wednesday or Friday. I will have a later day on Wednesday and Thursday. Conferences usually begin the week after Fall Break, September 24-28. I hope this is not too confusing. I am flexible and we will find a good time for each of you.
We had a wonderful week reading many versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The children enjoyed acting out the story using masks and decorating bears as a reminder of our Teddy Bear Picnic. Today the children brought one of their favorite stuffed animals. We introduced our animals and then sorted and made patters with them. After our math section of the MAP test, we all headed outside for our picnic. In Math we continued to review patterns and practice correct number formation. We also completed our first word problem together. Mrs. Ivey and I thought it went very smoothly for the first try. I read the problem to the children and they listen. Then they think about how they might solve the problem. They then draw their thinking, adding numbers and words when appropriate. We always try to label our answers. At home you can ask your child math problems too; for example, if I had 7 cookies and you had 4 cookies...how many cookies do we have all together? Ask them to explain their math thinking and how they came up with the answer. Next week we will kick off our Expedition on Kindness. We start by reading the book Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson. We then spend several weeks talking and learning about how we can show kindness in our families. Maybe you will see more kind acts around your house. I hope so.
