The children are so excited about reaching the 100th day of school. We will celebrate on Thursday, January 19th. It should be big fun in Kindergarten, but isn't every day fun when you are 5 or 6 years old? I sure hope so.
We read Todd Parr's book called The Peace Book and discussed different ways people find peace. The children painted a picture of where they find peace. It is always so much fun to paint in Kindergarten. Several groups of children researched a famous African American and shared what they learned with the class. We learn so much from each other. This week in math we started our unit on measurement. We began with length. We used popsicle sticks and unifex cubes to measure various items. We then compared the items using math words like longer, shorter, and equal. Soon we will move on to weight and capacity. (Next week we will take a break from measurement and focus on the 100th day of school! Thank you for helping your child with their collection of 100 things.) This week we did two really fun activities in Morning Meeting. The first one was called mirror. The children found a partner and stood right in front of them. One person went first and did a movement that the other person tried to mirror. The next activity was following your partner as you attempted to hold a pencil with just your index finger. So much fun to watch as they practice working together. It was sad to not get the snow last weekend, but this spring weather sure is a pleasant surprise. I hope you enjoy your long weekend. Maybe you could spend a few hours on MLK day helping someone in your neighborhood. The Decatur MLK Project will be going on all weekend if you have the time to give.
